Hair Growth Laser

Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growing, about 90 % of hairs), catagen (degeneration, less than 10% of hairs) and telogen (resting, 5% to 10% of hairs). Hair is shed during the telogen phase.

The most common cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, also known as hormone-related male or female pattern hair loss. In androgenic alopecia, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5-alpha reductase. DHT is the androgen that is affects hair follicles, causing miniaturization of the hair follicle units, subsequent hair thinning and finally hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia is more common in men than women, with 30%, 40%, and 50% of men experiencing androgenetic alopecia at 30, 40, and 50 years of age, respectively. Although this condition is less common in women, 38% of women older than 70 years may be affected.

There is usually a family history of hair loss.

Gradually progressive course of hair loss

Men: bitemporal thinning of the frontal and vertex scalp, progressing to complete hair loss with some hair at the occiput and temporal fringes.
Women: diffuse hair thinning of the vertex with sparing of the frontal hairline.

Treatments

1. Erbium YAG hair laser is a highly effective, advanced laser technology that helps to stimulate hair growth and reverse hair loss.

The laser stimulates hair regrowth by 3 pathways:

  1. Heat effects by the laser in the dermis of the scalp improve blood circulation which enables nutrients to better reach the hair follicles and stimulates new hair growth.
  2. The unique characteristics of the erbium YAG laser and pulses of heat generated in the dermis of the scalp cause the cells to produce “heat shock proteins” that stimulate the cells to produce growth factors that encourage hair follicle proliferation and growth
  3. The erbium YAG laser also stimulates the Wnt/Betacatenin cell signaling pathway. The Wnt/betacatenin signaling is specifically involved in hair follicle morphogenesis, regeneration, and growth. Betacatenin encourages hair follicles to “wake-up” and enter anagen (active growth) phase from the telogen (dormant) phase.

2. Other FDA approved treatments for hair loss include topical Minoxidil and oral finasteride (Propecia).

The Erbium YAG hair regrowth laser is a non-invasive, pain free treatment that does not require any injections.

There is also no associated downtime and daily activities and hair washing can resume as per normal immediately after treatment.

Treatment results usually become apparent after 3-4 sessions of the laser

Maintenance treatment with the hair laser is recommended to maintain treatment results.

It is important to complement the hair laser treatment with proper scalp care, scalp cleansing as well as the use of appropriate topical hair growth products and a tailored treatment plan encompassing all aspects to maximize hair regrowth effects will be curated for you at our clinic.
