What to Know about the Saxenda Injection Pen

What Is Saxenda and How Does It Work?

The Saxenda injection pen works by administering medications that induce feelings of fullness or satiety, thereby reducing one’s appetite and causing one to eat less. The medication in this injection pen typically comes in a pre-filled, disposable device.

Saxenda, or Liraglutide, is used in weight management alongside proper diet control and exercise. Its active ingredient, Liraglutide, imitates the effects of the GLP-1 hormone, which is naturally produced in the intestines. This hormone sends signals of satiety (fullness) to the brain, resulting in reduced appetite.

Saxenda’s main function is facilitating weight loss among eligible obese or overweight individuals, and helping maintain the lost weight over time. Additionally, Saxenda can lead to improved cardiometabolic markers such as decreased blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels, contributing to overall health improvement.

Do note that individual results may vary and there are other contributing factors at play.

Saxenda is generally recommended for adults struggling with obesity (with a BMI of 30 or more) or being overweight above a certain threshold, and with at least one weight-related health condition such as high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure.

Your doctor will perform a comprehensive health evaluation before determining your suitability for Saxenda.

On the other hand, people with certain health conditions may not be suitable for Saxenda. Some conditions include: heart failure, kidney disease, liver problems, and other gastrointestinal conditions.

How is Saxenda Used?

Saxenda should be administered once a day by injecting it under the skin (and not into a vein or muscle). Patients may do so at any time, with or without consuming food beforehand. You are also advised to change up the areas injected in order to prevent skin lumps from forming. Your doctor will provide personalised advice on how and where to administer the medication.

What are Possible Side Effects of Saxenda?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation. It is important to have an in-depth discussion with your doctor about the possible side effects and how to manage them before starting Saxenda.

Saxenda is a prescription-only medication and must be used under medical supervision in order to ensure optimal safety and efficacy. Speak to a doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for it.
